What is the best book to learn how to program?

I want to learn C then C++ but first want an understanding of good practices in programming and why you write programs in a certain order. I have only written 1 program in Basic so I seriously need a beginner book. I know which C book to buy (K%26amp;R 2nd edition) but not there yet.

What is the best book to learn how to program?
Chris Pine's book: Learn to Program.

It's a totally cool way to start out. It starts at the beginning with concepts like 'numbers', 'letters'. The books calls these things by their real-world names. Only later does it get into things like variables and functions and stuff. It eases one into the crazy jargon-filled world of programming with a focus on concepts, not the jargon.
Reply:Visual basic 6.0
Reply:For Dummies books
Reply:Do you really have to program? Better design man, it is more profitable.
Reply:Try "C++ for Artists". It brings the object oriented focus of c++ into view early on. There is also a series of books by Dietel and Dietel that are very good, but go into great depth.
Reply:Honestly, I think "learning to program" books are all crap, unless you already know programming and want a reference. Try looking for some online stuff, since it's free. I learned C/C++ by looking at examples online. You can also go to a community college and take an intro to programming class.

If you really want a book, I recommend the '94 edition of Deitel Deitel's How to Program C++. It's one of the better references that I have had. The new editions sort of suck because they add too much useless or OS specific stuff.

Use the link I provide to give you some links to online resources. I don't think they are the best, but it should give you something to start with.
