If I was going to go to the trouble of learning a programming language, which one should I learn?
c++ because it's platform independent with very few restrictions.

First, different languages have different benefits depending on the program you are going to write.





I personally have picked: C/C++, C#, ASP.NET, Java, Python, Prolog, Scheme, PHP, HTML, and Javascript as the languages I may choose to use - again depending on the nature of the program.
Reply:I realize that this seems at first like a non-answer, but it is very dependant on what you intend to do with the language. While there is some overlap in use and platform, it could be like trying to haul lumber in a Volkswagen Jetta. Reply:I would go with Ruby, since it is emerging as popular language for web based applications. I think in the future, we'll continue to see web applications as one of the biggest growth areas, and it lets you reach a world-wide audience fairly cheaply. Also Ruby is know for its clean syntax (similiar to Python), as well its easy-to-use framework Ruby-on-Rails, which helps jumpstart your introduction to writing web applications. It allows you to do a lot of useful stuff before you even know Ruby all that well. I learn best by doing, and Ruby-on-Rails helps you skip right to the "doing" part.
