How to learn to program, and what to learn?

I would really like to learn how to program web-based database driven applications/sites. I am an advanced computer user, but I've never programmed anything. I know some HTML basics, but the very very basics. How could I learn the basics of programming, at least to get me goin? And, how do I decide what language to learn? Also, if you're interested in teaching me for a (very reasonable) fee, I'd be open to that idea as well.

Thanks!

Thank you!
Reply:To make full fledged web applications you have two options- the more commonly used JSP for which you'll have to program the application in Java or you have ASP.NET which is picking up fast for which you'll have to program in either VB.NET or C#.NET.

sounds big isn't it?

no you'll have to go gradually step by step.

Firts strengthen your HTML. Then if you're interested then first learn ASP say from http://www.w3schools.com and then go to the programing part.

I mean initially you can make simple applications that dont need much programing like inserting, updating and deleting data in a database.

But to learn the programing part I'll assume you to have some good knowledge of any object oriented programing language.

I can guide you for a very nominal fee but cant teach you as i really dont have that much time.
