What is the best programming language to learn?

I know some visual basic what is the next progression?

C, C#, C++, Python, Java?

What is the best programming language to learn?
if you want to be a programmer, learn C.

If you are a scientist, get python

If you are a web developer, try perl or php

If you like riddles, and brain teasers, buy a C++ book.

If you are a girl and/or like to suffer for the sake of fashion, you'll want Java

If you are just toying around with a computer, then C# and VB are your friends.
Reply:since you already have some knowledge about programming,go for c++, python is relatively easier than c++, but i personally love c++ challenge.
Reply:for this time its recommanded to learn c# cos its the newest one

c++ is good but c# is beter cose its the fully object orinted programming language
Reply:This is really a religious question ;-)

Some will say that you are not really programming unless you are close to the metal with C or C++. However there is in my view a productivity hit. You could learn Assembler if you want to get snobby.

In my view C# and Java are great object oriented languages that also have the larger job market, at least right now. Ruby (with Rails) is coming on strong for web development.
Reply:Python is my fav.
Reply:C++ and Java
Reply:I would recommend Python for general use, and Ruby for web development. Ruby on Rails kicks (_)_)
Reply:C++ is by far the best language for speed BUT it's by far the most difficult to learn and you will be tied to an operating system.

C# and Java are good object languages. I was a VB programming for many years before moving to C# when it was new. I've been using C# for Windows applications and Java for Linux until recently. One of the major projects I currently have underway is translating ALL my software products from C# to Java so I have cross platform source code.

Once complete the company will only produce Java applications.
