What is the easiet programming language to learn? Visual Basic,Cobol or Java?

I am going to be starting back to college this summer to get a Bachelors in Computer Info Systems. I am 43 years old and I will be required to take one of the above mentioned program languages. Which one would be good for one of us older students to learn. I am leaning towards Java since my interest is in Web Development possibly.

What is the easiet programming language to learn? Visual Basic,Cobol or Java?
I wouldn't bother with Cobol (though some cobol programmers might disagree). Kind of dying out due to better techniques.

Of the 3 you listed, it seems like Java will get you further because its used in a lot of web development and it pretty powerful. But... a little hard to learn I think for a first language.

VB is great, but unless it's VB.NET, it will almost be useless for web based techniques.

.NET is not listed, but encompasses, VB, ASP, C# (c-sharp).

Commonly used in the web world. You will notice many sites end with .aspx (they are using .NET)

One you didn't mention is PHP which is free to download and a good start to learning how to program web scripts.

Has all the things you need to start doing that.
Reply:VB
Reply:I would suggest Java because Java is easy, very portable and very versatile, and has its own graphics kit. Stay away from COBOL. Visual Basic I would not really recommend since it isn't really a programming language.
Reply:you should also think about this question: "what language would be the most relevant in the industry?"

the answer to that question, out of the three options given would be Java in my mind.

especially in the web development world, Java beats the others in adoption hands-down.
Reply:Visual Basic would be easiest, IMHO. Specifically Visual Basic .NET, which ties in with ASP .NET which is geared towards web development.
