Python or Kids Programming Language for 7 to 10 year olds trying to learn programming?

Python is an excellent language to learn for kids. The lack of syntaxic sugar will make the overall langauge easier to learn. Another easy to learn language is Basic, but it's syntax is different from other languages which may make later transitions to other languages more difficult. But I do encourage you start with Python.

Are you kidding me?

Come back in 10 years
Reply:Yes, I think Python would be a good choice. I started programming when I was that age. One nice thing about Python is that there are open source development environments (and of course the code is open source too). So if the kids want to work at home, they don't need to buy any software, and the school doesn't need to buy anything either. Python is not strictly object oriented, so if you want to teach object oriented programming, you might want to choose C++ or Java. Since I have just been learning Python recently I put together some of the resources I found helpful on my webpage at www.homeworkcat.com
