I start taking classes next year(fall 2008), but i wanna learn a little from now at home.
Where should i start and what PL should I learn?!
I wanna learn programming! Where should i start?!?
Well before determining what language to learn you need to decide what kind of programming you want to learn. What I mean by that is programming for the web, programming for games, programming for applications, programming scripts, programming code for routers, switches, etc... So figure that out first and then go from there.
Web programming, would be java, php, asp, and html.
Applications, would be C++, visual studio, etc...
Games, also C++ and not sure what other coding would be needed there.
So again first determine what you want to program for, then learn the languages for want you want to do.
Reply:My personal opinion will be C. C++ and Java or C# also make good candidates. C or C++ knowledge will take you a long way in learning many of the other languages. But be warned, without many many errors and annoyances, you will not be able to learn any of these languages.
If getting quick results and an easy to learn language appeals to your taste, try a flavour of lisp. Common Lisp or Emacs Lisp will be good.
Reply:learn how to build web-based applications, ie. PHP, MySQL, ASP, HTML
Reply:Python or Ruby - to learn core programming concept.
Learning programming language is same as learning language syntax. How to program is different matter.
Try to focus on learning algorithm, modeling, design pattern and data structure concepts instead. Don't spend too much time on learning language syntax because syntax can be learned once you understand these concepts.
Programming language/script like python or ruby is very good FirstLanguage to learn how to program and understand core computer programming concept. It has interactive mode where you can experiment code in realtime without compiling/linking etc..
hope this helped.
Reply:learn java.
Reply:You should look into c++ and visual basic. You will most likely be able to find some reading from a google search or you could buy some books from amazon.
Reply:Java or C++.
Java is a bit easier to start out with, but if you learn C++ correctly from the start the move to Java is a cakewalk. If you learn Java first and then move to C++, it will not hold your hand nearly as much, and the transition may be more difficult.
If you had someone tutoring you, I'd say C++ in an instant, because you can get your questions answered quickly. If you're going to be doing a self-study sort of operation, it's an even draw.
Good luck!
Reply:I would try and figure out what language you are going to be learning next fall, and start with that one. There are LOTS of books out there on beginner programming, choose one that uses the language your are going to be using in class. There are also many tutorials online, again do a little searching and find one that uses the same language that you will be using in class.
