I want to learn the basics of computer programming, where is best to start?

Is there a good book / website that someone can recommend?

You should contact your local college and make full use of the local library.I am just studying C++ myself so I can recommend the following books: C++ for Dummies by Stephen R. Davis, published by Wiley and C++ without fear by Brian Overland, published by Prentice Hall. Both books are informative and user friendly. They both have an accompaning CD-ROM. Online tutorials are also available and a simple search will provide your links.Enjoy your study. good luck!!
Reply:computer programming course
Reply:I spent years at college learning how to program - that's the best place to start! Like anything worth learning, it's worth getting taught properly rather than wading through unintelligible gibberish in books etc.

It's not just how to put the programming words and sentences together, you also need to understand about logic and how to put things together in a sensible structures, for example.

BASIC is fairly easy to learn I suppose. People like me in their 30s were using it to program their micro computers as kids in the 1980s. But in the real world there are numerous complex languages that are used.
Reply:i would recommend u to start with JavaScript

javaScript is really intersting because its very interactive in nature

u can learn from w3schools.com

then go for some mature language like C++ or JAVA or C#
Reply:start from visual basic.. and dont take any class.. they will just make it worse
Reply:www.learnvisualstudio.net

has great beginning tutorials for vb.net and c#.

If you can take a first level class, do it. If you cant, go to your local community college and pick up a book for one of the lower-division classes.

Computer Science departments also post the notes from their lectures on-line. Though this link is a bit dated it shows you the possibilities out there if you google well:

I agree with the above answer, it best to learn right the first time, because bad habits you learn early make your life difficult when you are actually working.
Reply:If you actually want to learn programming and you have sufficient motivation, then teaching yourself is definitely the best option.

Best online tutorial site, and it's pretty cheap. Learn at your own pace, you just have to put in the effort ;)

I myself find that I start slacking off after a few weeks with any sort of tutorial based learning, so if you're at all like me then I suggest you sign yourself up for a class or two.

Sure, they go slower than you can learn the stuff yourself, but they actually do make you learn the stuff. Your choice, just my two cents.

That site is great though for any type of tutorial. If you don't want to pay the subscription fee, you may consider using p2p software to download tutorials from that site. It's very popular so there are plenty of files up.
